Wild turkey(Meleagris gallopavo) hunting has become firmly established in Canada since its successful reintroduction in the 1980s. Initially absent from several provinces, the species has undergone remarkable expansion in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
Spring represents the strategic period par excellence. Toms (adult males) are in the midst of their reproductive phase. Their territorial and reproductive instincts drive them to vocalize intensely and actively seek out hens. It is precisely this behavior that enables the hunter who has mastered the calls to provoke responses and control the approach.
An effective spring hunter doesn’t depend on chance. He understands the turkey’s biological cycle, social hierarchy, daily rhythm and, above all, vocal communication.

Wild turkey populations in Canada have been growing steadily over the past 20 years.
| Province | Estimated population | Average success rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 70 000 – 90 000 | 28-32 % |
| Quebec | 35 000 – 45 000 | 24-27 % |
| Manitoba | 5 000 – 8 000 | 26 % |
On average, 60-70% of harvests take place within the first 90 minutes after sunrise.
The spring season generally runs from late April to late May, depending on latitude.
The daily cycle of a tom :
Understanding these phases enables you to adapt the intensity and type of call.
Main contact call. Series of 5 to 8 clear, rising notes. The basis of any strategy.
Short, dry note. Ideal when the tom is less than 100 meters away.
Soft purr expressing calm. Excellent in combination with “cluck and purr”.
Fast, aggressive series. Used to provoke a dominant tom accompanied by hens.
| Sequence | Use |
|---|---|
| Tree Yelp + Cackle | Imitate the descent from the perch |
| Aggressive cutting | Competition with real pools |
| Soft Cluck & Purr | Silent final approach |
Use a location call (crow or owl). Identify toms before installation.
Tree yelp soft. Wait for descent. Increase intensity only if response.
Use the competition strategy if the tom is accompanied.
Calls spaced every 20-30 minutes. Target feeding areas.
Ontario: High density in the south. High success rate.
Québec: Estrie and Montérégie very productive.
Manitoba: Populations concentrated in the southwest.
Saskatchewan & Alberta: Less pressure, but access sometimes limited.
To maximize your chances, choose decoys designed for North American conditions.
